In this class you will learn how to make a basic jersey dress using the ‘Coco’ pattern from Tilly and the Buttons. We will be sewing everything on a normal sewing machine (not on an overlocker) so that you’ll be able to make another one at home on your normal sewing machine.

The dress has set in sleeves, with the option of a regular boat neck, or a funnel collar, and you can add optional pockets and cuff bands. The pattern can also be made as a top, making it a really versatile pattern to have in your collection. As stretchy fabrics can sometimes be a little tricky to work with, you should have made a few garments before and be familiar with using a pattern as we wont be covering that in this lesson.

Fabric suggestions:

Medium weight knit fabrics with a little stretch. Ponte di roma, double knit and medium weight jersey are all good options. Make sure the jersey is thick enough to make a dress from (eg. Its not see through!)

Fabric 45”/115cm wide or wider

Boat neck dress:

• sizes 6-14 - 2.7m (3yd)

• sizes 16-24 - 2.8m (3 1/8yd)

• sizes 26-34 - 3.4m (3 1/2yd)

Dress with funnel neck + cuffs:

• sizes 6-14 - 2.7m (3yd)

• sizes 16-24 - 3.1m (3 3/8yd)

• sizes 26-34 - 3.6m (4yd)

Fabric 55”/140cm wide or wider

Boat neck dress:

• sizes 6-14 - 2m (2 1/4yd)

• sizes 16-20 - 2.2m (2 1/2yd)

• sizes 22-24 - 2.4m (2 5/8yd)

• sizes 26-34 - 2.9m (3 1/4yd)

It’s a good idea to have pre-washed your fabric so that you know the shrinking is done before you sew a garment. Wash the fabric on the temperature you normally wash your clothes, or a bit higher. If you are buying the fabric on the day of the class, you can use our steam iron to pre-shrink the fabric before cutting.

WHO IS THIS workshop SUITABLE FOR?

This class is an intermediate – sewing with stretch level. You should be comfortable with using a sewing machine and have made quite a few garments at home. You know how to use a pattern, but you are new to sewing with stretch. In these classes we focus on how to sew with stretch fabrics, using a regular sewing machine.
